Monthly Art Journal - Summer Sunshine

Hello friends!
I'm so excited to be back making my art journal pages again!  I didn't realize how much I had missed playing with my neglected stash and creating from a blank canvas and mixing media!  I am happy to be collaborating with my long time blog buddy once again too!! :)

**If you are new to my blog or missed my previous AJ posts:  I have joined together with my talented blog friend Asha from Sunny Summer Crafts to inspire each other through our Art Journal Pages and share them on our blogs on a monthly basis with you to maybe inspire our other crafty friends.  Perhaps you will be inspired to give AJ pages a try!  We just want to share our love of crafting through this wonderful mixed media art form.  If you would like to see my past AJ pages, you can CLICK HERE to have a look at them all.**

We are in the middle of Summer where I live and during our Summer months, it gets extremely hot hot hot!  Although it is hot, I have to say that I just love all of the sunshine...not so much for bringing the heat, which it does, but also for what it does for your spirit, the growing of our flowers and plants as well as making us get a nice tan color on our skin and getting to pull out our stylish shades!  I especially love the the sparkle it gives the water dancing across the ripples along with providing us a spectacular sun set with a stunning color show right before it says good night.

These good feelings are what helped inspire my AJ page for today:
I am starting with a 6x9 Canson #140 coldpress watercolor, prepped with gesso that was punched at the top for a ring binding book I'm making.

I wanted the sun to be in the background, but to also be so large that it takes up most of the page because it is actually the entire reason for this idea.  I did not have any die or template for a circle, so I just went in my kitchen and pulled out one of my plates to create the large orange circle.  My plate wasn't a perfect circle as it had "ripples" in it, but I thought it looked pretty cool, so I just went with it.  I had some old orange colored patterned paper from my stash that I used for this, but I decided it wasn't quite the right orange color, so I painted over it.  Once dry, I embossed the background image from Designs By Ryn with some gold embossing powder.  I went around the edges of it and over it in various places with some copper Nuvo mousse.

I then took the circle and placed it where I thought I wanted it on my page without attaching it and traced where it was with a pencil and then set it aside.  I took my outline to measure where I would be putting down my painter's tape to create the "sun rays".  Before placing the painter's tape down, I covered the background area with a mixture of yellow and neon yellow paints and let dry.  After it dried, I placed my painter's tape where I wanted for my first color and painted some marigold for one set of rays, removed the tape and then repeated the process for another set of sun rays that I painted in a canary yellow color and removed the tape to let dry.  I then decided to add some gold embossing with the triangle border stamp for more interest along some of the sun rays.  I've also taken more of that copper mousse and rubbed it over various places in the background.

Here's a closer look at the top of the page:
After I heat embossed the triangle borders, I went ahead and attached the orange sun cirle over my traced outline for it.  I then took some black gesso and made some splatters over the background.  I used this same black gesso to paint over the "summer" chipboard letters as they were not the color I wanted them to be.  After they were dry, I went over them with some more of that copper mousse and attached them above the orange sun circle.  I took my Pitt Brush marker to go along the edge of the orange circle for a bit of dimension.  I also took a white gel pen to add highlights on the letters.

Moving further on down the page:
I actually have used a few items from a couple of older card kits for the elements on this page.
For the "sunshine" lettering, I took a word die from an older card kit and die cut it out several times in black card stock.  I also cut one out with some gold glitter paper.  I stacked out 4 of the black together and then offset the glitter one on top so that the black slightly shows behind it giving it a dimensional look.  I did the same with the die cut heart above the "i" letter.  I replaced the dot in the die with a heart.  Below the "sunshine" word, I cut out a banner with a quote I made from my computer and then outlined it with my black Pitt Marker.

Moving to the bottom of the page:
Again, I have used some elements from an older card kit which is where the sailboat came from.  I stamped it and colored it with my Copic markers and attached it to the page.

To achieve the "water" at the bottom, I took some embossing paste and mixed it with a blue colored Peal Ex powder.  Unfortunately, it looses some of that pretty shimmer that Pearl Ex powder has, so while it was still wet, I added some blue glitter to the mix and I just love all of the sparkle it has on it!  I simply mixed it all together with a palette knife and spread it out over the bottom of my page and tried to swirl it around so it resembles some sparkling water.

While it was still somewhat wet, I took some puffy fish stickers from an older card kit and pushed them into the "water" paste and let it dry.  Lastly, I finished out the page with some sparkling clear sequins from Pretty Pink Posh and added some gold Stickles in the center of each one.

I love all of the sparkle on this and I have it setting on my desk right now.

I hope you've enjoyed my AJ page and got inspired!  Be sure to hop on over to Asha's blog and take a look at what inspiration she has with her Art Journal Page too!

Thank you so much for stopping by!
Hope you are able to get out and enjoy the sunshine today!

Oh, my!!! This is a stunner! You have captured the spirit of summer. Looks like both of us had the same idea in mind ... what can I say... great minds and all that...! I live by the sea where seagulls and sailboat are what summer is all about. I'm totally loving the texture of the sea and the colour is simply gorgeous. This is THE summer AJ page for sure. You're back with a bang my friend! I'll try and stay on top of things for our next collab... that's the plan for now! LOL.
